Timer plug OLED pixel refresh

In short

Many LG OLED TVs run a pixel refresh overnight in standby (still plugged in, screen dark). Menus may call it Pixel Refresher, Pixel Refresh, or Pixel Cleaning. The goal is less image retention (ghosting) and more even wear of the OLED cells.

A timer plug (mains timer) hard-cuts the supply. Then there is no real standby — and the planned overnight refresh cannot run.

What the pixel refresh needs

Refresh is not a quick button press; it is often a longer background job while the set looks “off”. The TV must keep getting power from the wall and enter the manufacturer’s standby mode.

If you only use the remote, it typically stays in standby. If you pull the plug or the timer cuts power at midnight, the job is interrupted or never starts.

Risks when the overnight run is missing

Without regular refresh, ghost images and uneven brightness can appear or linger more easily — especially after bright logos, tickers, or on-screen game/broadcast overlays.

One missed night does not ruin the panel. A habit of cutting power every night removes the care cycle meant for long, even picture quality.

• Higher risk of visible ghosting over weeks and months

What about CEC?

CEC means Consumer Electronics Control — an HDMI feature that lets devices control each other (for example a soundbar turning the TV off with it). CEC is not the same as a timer plug: CEC sends commands over the HDMI cable; a timer plug cuts the mains supply.

If you “power off together” via CEC, the TV can still stay in standby and refresh overnight — as long as the wall outlet still supplies power. If the timer plug cuts power, CEC cannot help: no mains, no refresh.

Better alternatives to a timer plug

Use the energy and power-off timers in the TV menu, leave normal standby, and avoid hard mains cuts overnight.

To save power: check which standby options the maker offers, and whether a manual pixel refresh can be started when needed — instead of unplugging every night.

• Leave the TV in soft-off / standby (mains stays connected)
• Use the TV’s own sleep or energy-saving timers
• Do not set a timer plug to kill the overnight refresh window
• If unsure: run a manual refresh once and watch the panel

When a timer plug can still make sense

During the day or longer absences, cutting power can be fine — if you accept that maintenance cycles pause too. For the nightly rhythm, standby plus pixel care is the manufacturer-aligned approach.
