LG OLED turns itself off

In short

If your LG OLED turns itself off — mid-film, after warm-up, or shortly after power-on — the panel is rarely the first suspect. Very often the power supply (PSU) collapses under load or heat.

A related pattern: the TV clicks and goes off. That soft relay-like sound means the start chain engages and protection drops out again — classic with aging filter capacitors.

Typical failure pattern

Behaviour is often intermittent: stable in the morning, problematic after heat — or after long run-time. A short unplug may help briefly, then shutdown returns.

• Set starts, picture appears — off after seconds or minutes
• Click / relay-like sound, then darkness
• Worse on bright scenes or higher volume (higher load)
• Pixel refresh or standby jobs abort
• Later only blink code or total no-power

Why the PSU is often to blame

Many LG OLED PSUs use film capacitors (including 820 nF, often marked 824J 500V). They lose capacitance over years. Ripple rises, soft-start and protection trip — the TV looks like it “turns itself off”.

Reading “clicks and goes off”

A single click at power-on can be normal. Repeated clicking with immediate or delayed shutdown points to a supply that cannot hold rails.

Software energy savers or HDMI-CEC can also power down a set — usually without a hard relay click and often with menu/timer context. Mechanical click + instant black: hardware supply first.

Safety notice

Mains voltage is lethal. Open chassis and PSU mean dangerous voltages. Electrolytics can hold charge — discharge before measuring. Never swap parts under power.
